What they do

Black Forest Labs builds generative AI models that create and edit images and video from text and visual prompts. Its FLUX family is offered through a paid API for production use and, for some versions, as open weights that developers can download and run themselves. The company now describes its work as visual intelligence, and its latest line extends beyond pictures into video with native audio and into models that predict physical outcomes and control actions for robots.

Why it matters

Europe has few AI labs that compete at the frontier, and Black Forest Labs is one of them. Its models are judged against those of the largest American and Chinese players, and they have found their way into professional tools: Adobe has integrated FLUX into Photoshop, and brands including Deutsche Telekom and Mercedes-Benz have used the models in marketing work. The mix of commercial API and open weights has also made FLUX a default choice for many developers building image tools of their own.

The team's track record explains much of this. Robin Rombach and Andreas Blattmann began working on generative models at German universities and then co-developed Stable Diffusion, one of the most influential open image models, before leaving to found their own company in 2024.

Products to know

  • FLUX 3 Image: image generation across a wide range of styles, with accurate text rendering.
  • FLUX 3 Video: text-to-video with optional native audio.
  • FLUX 3 Image Klein: a fast, open-weights model aimed at image editing.
  • FLUX API: production access to the models, with a playground and dashboard.

The German angle

The latent diffusion approach behind Stable Diffusion came out of German academic research, and Black Forest Labs is in effect that research returning home as a company. Choosing Freiburg, rather than Berlin or Munich, is a statement in itself: a university city at the edge of the Black Forest now hosts one of the world's most closely watched generative AI teams, with a second base in San Francisco. Rombach, now chief executive, has said the goal is simply to produce the best AI technology in the world.
