What they do
DATEV is the quiet infrastructure behind German bookkeeping. The Nuremberg cooperative provides software, cloud services and data centre capacity to tax advisers, auditors and lawyers, and through them to the small and mid-sized businesses they serve. Its products cover financial accounting, payroll, annual accounts, tax returns and document exchange between firms and their clients, along with managed IT for advisory practices.
Why it matters
Anyone who has run a company in Germany has almost certainly met DATEV, whether through a DATEV export from their own system, a payroll run processed by their Steuerberater or a monthly upload of receipts. The format has become a de facto standard: international ERP and expense tools routinely advertise a DATEV interface as a condition of entry to the German market.
The ownership model is what makes DATEV unusual. It is a registered cooperative whose members are the professionals who use it, so customers are also the people who decide its direction. That structure has favoured long-term reliability over growth at any cost, and it explains the company's careful but steady move from punched tape to PCs, then to the cloud and now to AI. Since 1995 it has transmitted tax data electronically to the authorities, and since December 2023 its KI-Werkstatt has offered generative AI tools to members.

The German angle
DATEV was founded on 14 February 1966 by 65 tax agents in the Nuremberg chamber district, led by Heinz Sebiger, who wanted to pool scarce and expensive computing power. That logic of shared infrastructure for a regulated profession is very German, and so is the result: a technology company embedded in the country's tax system, owned by its users and anchored in Franconia rather than in a start-up capital. It also publishes the monthly DATEV Mittelstandsindex, drawn from anonymised client data, which offers a useful read on the health of German small business.
