What they do

Delivery Hero runs online platforms that connect customers with restaurants, grocery stores and shops, and it handles much of the delivery itself through networks of riders. It has also built its own small, fast-delivery warehouses for groceries and everyday goods. The group operates through local brands across Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and parts of Europe.

Why it matters

Delivery Hero is one of the few German internet companies to build a truly global business. Its strategy has been to buy or build strong local brands, from talabat in the Gulf to Baemin in South Korea and PedidosYa in Latin America, and to run them on shared technology. That portfolio has made it a strategic prize. After a period of activist pressure and a strategic review, Delivery Hero agreed in July 2026 to a cash takeover offer from Uber, with its largest shareholder Prosus committing its shares.

Completion depends on regulatory approvals and is expected in the second half of 2027. As part of the agreement, Delivery Hero plans to sell its businesses in markets where it competes with Uber Eats, and Uber has given commitments on the Berlin workforce and on investment in Germany. Until closing, Delivery Hero remains an independent, listed company headquartered in Berlin.

Products to know

  • talabat: the group's main delivery brand in the Middle East.
  • foodpanda: food and grocery delivery across Asia.
  • Glovo: a multi-category delivery app in Europe and Africa.
  • Baemin: its food delivery app in South Korea.

The German angle

Niklas Östberg, Kolja Hebenstreit, Markus Fuhrmann and Lukasz Gadowski founded Delivery Hero in Berlin in 2011. It listed in Frankfurt in 2017 and joined the DAX in 2020. The company is a product of the Berlin start-up boom of the early 2010s, and its pending sale to an American rival will be read as a test of whether Germany's largest consumer technology companies can stay independent, or whether their future lies inside global groups.
