What they do
C. Josef Lamy GmbH designs and manufactures fountain pens, ballpoints, rollerballs, mechanical pencils and digital writing tools. C. Josef Lamy started his own business in Heidelberg in 1930 as the Orthos fountain pen factory. Production remains in Heidelberg, which the company presents as central to its "Made in Germany" identity.
Why it matters
LAMY made design, rather than ornament, the selling point of a writing instrument. Its turning point came under Dr Manfred Lamy, who commissioned the former Braun designer Gerd A. Müller to create the LAMY 2000, launched in autumn 1966. Its clean, functional form drew on the Bauhaus tradition and set the tone for the brand. In 1980 the company unveiled the safari at the Frankfurt fair, a robust moulded plastic pen designed by Wolfgang Fabian with the Mannheim Development Group led by Professor Bernt Spiegel. It became a favourite in schools and among design-conscious adults, and is widely regarded as a modern classic.

The German angle
For most of its history LAMY was a family-owned Mittelstand company with a clear design doctrine. In February 2024 it became part of the Mitsubishi Pencil Company, the Japanese maker of the uni and POSCA brands. The new owner has kept the Heidelberg site, and the deal pairs LAMY's European design and engineering heritage with Japanese scale in manufacturing and distribution.
