What they do
Scalable Capital runs a digital investment platform for private investors. Customers can trade shares, ETFs and other securities through its broker, either paying per trade or taking a monthly flat-fee plan, and set up ETF savings plans from small monthly amounts. For those who prefer not to pick investments, Scalable Wealth offers automated portfolio management. The company has added savings accounts, a retirement product and lending, and it is now regulated as a bank in its own right through Scalable Capital Bank GmbH.
Why it matters
Germans have historically kept their savings in bank deposits rather than shares. Neobrokers such as Scalable have helped to change that, making it cheap and simple to buy ETFs and building a generation of retail investors through monthly savings plans. Scalable has also invested in market infrastructure: it operates the European Investor Exchange with Börse Hannover, which brings trading, clearing, settlement and custody onto one platform.
Its banking licence, granted by the European Central Bank in 2025, reduces reliance on partner banks and allows the company to hold deposits and lend directly. In August 2026 it opened its platform to external AI assistants, letting customers use tools such as ChatGPT and Claude to analyse portfolios and place trades.

The German angle
Erik Podzuweit, Florian Prucker, Adam French and Stefan Mittnik founded the company in Munich in 2014. Its first product was a robo-adviser, and brokerage followed later. Scalable is part of a strong Munich fintech cluster and, alongside Berlin's Trade Republic, defines a German model of retail investing that has since spread to other European markets. Its decision to secure a full banking licence reflects the realities of German financial regulation, where trust and supervision weigh heavily with customers.
