What they do
Siemens Healthineers builds the machines that hospitals use to see inside the body, test blood and treat cancer. Its portfolio runs from computed tomography and magnetic resonance scanners to laboratory analysers, point-of-care tests, interventional X-ray suites and radiotherapy systems, tied together by clinical software and service contracts. The company describes itself as a publicly listed, independent company of the Siemens group, and it reports along three lines: Imaging, Diagnostics and a newer Precision Therapy segment that brings Varian, advanced therapies and ultrasound together around treatment.
Why it matters
Few German companies sit so close to everyday medicine worldwide. A patient scanned in Seoul, São Paulo or Stuttgart has a fair chance of lying inside a machine designed in Franconia. The company is also a technology leader in a narrow but consequential field: in 2021 it launched the first clinical CT scanner based on photon-counting detectors, which register individual X-ray photons rather than averaging their energy, sharpening images and opening the door to lower radiation doses.
Its corporate future is in motion. Siemens AG floated the business in Frankfurt in 2018 and kept control. In late 2025 the parent announced plans to cut its holding to a significant minority by handing shares directly to its own shareholders, with a vote now planned for its February 2027 annual meeting. Readers should expect a more independent Healthineers, with its own capital allocation choices, over the next two years.
Products to know
- NAEOTOM Alpha: the photon-counting CT system that put the technology into routine clinical use.
- MAGNETOM: the long-running family of MRI scanners.
- Atellica: laboratory diagnostics systems for clinical chemistry and immunoassay testing.
- Varian: radiotherapy and oncology systems, now at the heart of the Precision Therapy segment.
The German angle
Erlangen and nearby Forchheim form one of Europe's densest medical technology clusters, built around more than a century of Siemens work in X-ray and electromedicine. The region pairs that industrial base with Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and its university hospital, giving engineers ready access to clinicians and researchers. Siemens Healthineers is the anchor of that ecosystem, and its gradual separation from Siemens AG is one of the more significant corporate restructurings in German industry this decade.
