What they do

Tetra develops and makes food, water care products, water tests and equipment for aquariums and garden ponds. Its best-known product is TetraMin, a dry flake food for tropical fish. Spectrum Brands' annual report for fiscal 2025 states that most Tetra aquatics nutrition and care products are manufactured at its facility in Melle, near Osnabrück.

Why it matters

Before Tetra, keeping tropical fish meant regular trips to ponds and streams to catch live food. Dr Ulrich Baensch, a young natural scientist and fish enthusiast, registered a business called Tropenhaus in Hanover in 1951 and set up a test laboratory, BioMin, in 1953. In 1955 he launched TetraMin, a flake food in four flake types with added vitamins. The name joins the Greek word for four with a syllable of vitamin. Pet trade magazine PET worldwide calls it the world's best-selling fish food, and Wikipedia notes that Germany had only about 50,000 fishkeepers in the 1950s. Convenient, shelf-stable food helped turn a niche into a mass hobby.

Products to know

  • TetraMin: the original flake food, still the brand's anchor.
  • AquaSafe: water conditioner for tap water.
  • Tetra Pond: the garden pond range introduced in the 1980s.
  • Test kits and filters: water tests and technical equipment.

The German angle

Tetra is a German invention that has spent most of its life under American ownership. The headquarters moved to Melle in 1962, when the firm had about 20 staff and Baensch already held 15 manufacturing patents. In 1974 the company was sold to Warner-Lambert, later part of Pfizer. Pfizer sold the aquatics business to the Triton fund in 2002, and Spectrum Brands bought Tetra in 2005. As of its fiscal 2025 filings, Spectrum Brands keeps Global Pet Care as a core business while it separates its home and personal care unit. Production, research and logistics remain in Lower Saxony, a reminder that a hidden champion can keep its German roots under foreign owners.
