What it is
The Arizona is a sandal with two broad straps over the foot, each with a buckle, set on Birkenstock's contoured footbed. The company introduced it in 1973, a year before its 200th anniversary. It combined elements of the single-strap Madrid and the earlier Zurich model and became Birkenstock's most popular sandal.
How it works
The key to the Arizona is the footbed, originally developed by Konrad Birkenstock and standardised for mass production by Karl Birkenstock in the 1960s. Its shape follows the anatomy of a healthy foot, with a deep heel cup, arch support and a raised toe bar. The footbed is built up from layers of suede, jute and cork, and adapts to the wearer's foot over time. The two adjustable straps hold the foot in place without enclosing it, allowing air to circulate.
Why it stands out
The Arizona has a striking cultural history. For years it was regarded as a practical health sandal, worn by people who valued comfort over fashion. In recent decades it became a fashion item, embraced by designers, celebrities and young consumers, without fundamentally changing its design. That shows the strength of a product built around a clear functional idea. The Arizona has helped turn Birkenstock from a family shoemaker into a listed global brand.
Where you meet it
You see the Arizona on city streets, beaches and university campuses, in hospitals and kitchens and in fashion editorials. It is sold in many materials, from classic leather and synthetic Birko-Flor to waterproof EVA versions.
