What it is
n8n is a workflow automation platform developed by n8n GmbH, founded in Berlin in 2019 by Jan Oberhauser. The project launched publicly in October 2019. It is distributed under a fair-code model: the source code is available and can be self-hosted and modified, but the licence restricts reselling it as a competing hosted service. The company also offers a managed cloud version.
How it works
Users build workflows in a visual editor by connecting nodes on a canvas. Each node represents a step, such as receiving data from a form, querying a database, calling an API, sending an email or posting a message. Data flows from node to node, and users can add logic, loops and custom code in JavaScript or Python where needed. Workflows can run on schedules, in response to events or on demand. In recent years n8n has added AI nodes and agent capabilities, so large language models can make decisions and call other tools within a workflow.
Why it stands out
n8n sits between simple no-code automation tools and custom software development. Its flexibility, the option to self-host for data control and its popularity among developers have made it one of the fastest-growing German software companies. The rise of AI agents has given it a new role as a practical way to connect language models with real business systems. For European companies concerned about data protection, the ability to run the platform on their own servers is a significant advantage.
Where you meet it
n8n is used by developers, IT teams, start-ups and operations departments to automate tasks such as lead processing, reporting, data synchronisation and customer support. A large community shares workflow templates, and many small businesses use it to connect their apps without writing full software.
