What it is
Vector is an unmanned aerial system made by Quantum Systems, a company founded in 2015 by Florian Seibel and based near Munich. It is a tactical reconnaissance drone designed to be carried in backpacks and deployed quickly in the field. Quantum Systems introduced it in 2020 in partnership with the US software company Auterion.
How it works
Vector combines the advantages of helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. It takes off and lands vertically using rotors, so it needs no runway or launcher, and then transitions to efficient wing-borne flight for long endurance and range. It carries cameras and sensors to provide live images by day and night. The system is modular, so payloads and components can be swapped quickly, and its software supports autonomous flight.
Why it stands out
Vector has become one of the most visible examples of Germany's new defence technology sector. Germany financed orders of hundreds of Vector systems for Ukraine, where they are used for reconnaissance and artillery spotting, giving the company direct experience under real combat conditions. The Bundeswehr has also bought Quantum Systems drones. The company's rapid growth shows how start-ups combining hardware, software and fast iteration are reshaping a defence industry traditionally dominated by large established groups.
Where you meet it
Vector is used by armed forces and security agencies, above all in Ukraine. Quantum Systems' related drones, such as the Trinity, are used in civilian roles for land surveying, mapping, agriculture and construction.
