Four German AI companies to know

From translation to defence, German AI companies are building products used far beyond Germany. A short introduction to four of them.

Discussions about artificial intelligence usually centre on the United States and China. Germany has its own AI companies, and several have built products with an international user base. Here are four worth knowing, each covering a different part of the market.

DeepL: language

DeepL, based in Cologne, develops AI translation and writing tools. Its products are used by individuals and companies through the web, desktop and mobile apps and an API.

Aleph Alpha: sovereign AI for organisations

Heidelberg-based Aleph Alpha builds generative AI technology aimed at enterprises and the public sector, with an emphasis on data sovereignty and explainable results.

Celonis: AI for business processes

Munich's Celonis is known for process mining: analysing data from systems such as ERP software to show how business processes really run, and where they can be improved.

Helsing: defence

Helsing, also headquartered in Munich, develops AI software and systems for defence, with a stated focus on serving European democracies.
