Why we built FocusGermany
Germany develops far more technology than its reputation for cars and machinery suggests. FocusGermany puts it in one place.
Ask people what Germany makes and most will answer cars, machines and perhaps beer. All true, and all incomplete. A large share of the country's technology sits further down the value chain: in components, software, optics, materials and specialised equipment that end up inside products made elsewhere.
That work is easy to miss. Many of the companies behind it are not consumer brands, publish mainly in German, or are based far from Berlin, Munich or Hamburg. For anyone outside the German-speaking world, finding them takes effort.
What FocusGermany does
FocusGermany is an English-language window on what is developed in Germany. It has two parts:
The Company Index: a searchable directory of German technology companies, organised by sector and location. Each entry is short, factual and links to the company's official website.
Articles: explainers on technologies and products, and profiles of the companies behind them.
How we work
We only publish facts we can trace to a reliable source, usually the company itself, and we keep entries deliberately brief. Where information cannot be confirmed, we leave it out rather than estimate. If you spot an error or know a company that belongs here, tell us.
