What they do

Siemens Energy supplies technology for generating and transmitting electricity. Its businesses cover gas turbines and related services, grid technologies such as high-voltage transmission and transformers, equipment and services for industrial decarbonisation, and wind turbines through its subsidiary Siemens Gamesa.

The company became independent on 1 April 2020, when Siemens spun off its gas and power activities, and its shares began trading in Frankfurt that September. Its registered office is in Munich. In July 2026 it announced that Siemens Energy and Siemens Gamesa will move to a single new brand, Omterra, rolled out in stages, which the company says is a brand change and not a change in ownership.

Why it matters

Electricity demand is rising with data centres, electric vehicles and heat pumps, and grids built for an earlier era need expansion. Siemens Energy sits at several of the main pressure points: transmission equipment for connecting renewable power, gas turbines for flexible backup generation and electrolysers for green hydrogen.

Its recent history has been turbulent. Quality problems at Siemens Gamesa's onshore turbines in 2023 hit the share price and led the company to seek government guarantees, before strong demand for grid and gas technology drove a sharp recovery.

Products to know

  • Gas turbines and services: equipment for power plants and industrial users.
  • Grid technologies: high-voltage transmission, substations and transformers.
  • Siemens Gamesa wind turbines: offshore and onshore turbines, with offshore nacelles built in Cuxhaven.
  • Electrolysers: systems for producing hydrogen from electricity.

The German angle

Siemens Energy carries more than a century and a half of Siemens engineering into an independent company. Werner von Siemens founded the parent in Berlin in 1847, and power generation and transmission were among the oldest Siemens businesses.

Its German footprint includes a wind factory on the North Sea coast at Cuxhaven alongside long-established engineering sites. The planned move to the Omterra brand marks a symbolic step in the separation from its former parent, while existing legal entities and contracts remain in place.
