What they do

SMA makes the power electronics that turn solar energy into usable electricity. Its inverters convert direct current from photovoltaic panels into alternating current for homes and the grid, and its battery inverters manage storage. The range runs from small units for a single roof to large central inverters for solar farms, alongside energy management software that links solar, storage, heat pumps and electric vehicle charging.

Why it matters

Solar panels are now largely commodities made in Asia, but the inverter is where much of the intelligence of a solar system lives. It determines how efficiently power is harvested, how a plant behaves on the grid and how well storage and flexible loads are coordinated. As solar becomes the largest source of new electricity in many countries, grid operators need inverters that can stabilise frequency and voltage rather than simply feed in power, and SMA has positioned itself around those grid-forming and system functions.

The company has been through hard cycles, as Chinese competition and swings in demand have pressured European manufacturers. It remains one of the few Western inverter makers with a full product range from residential to utility scale, which gives it strategic weight as Europe looks to secure critical parts of its energy supply chain.

Products to know

  • Sunny Boy: the long-running inverter line for residential rooftops.
  • Sunny Tripower X: three-phase inverters for commercial installations.
  • Sunny Central FLEX: a modular platform for utility-scale solar and storage plants.
  • Sunny Boy Storage: battery inverters for home energy storage.

The German angle

SMA was founded in 1981 as a spin-off from the University of Kassel by Günther Cramer, Werner Kleinkauf, Peter Drews and Reiner Wettlaufer. It grew rapidly on the back of Germany's renewable energy feed-in tariffs during the first solar boom. Headquartered in Niestetal near Kassel, it is listed in the Prime Standard of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and remains an important industrial employer in northern Hesse, a region that has built a cluster of research and companies around decentralised energy systems.
