What it is

Sunny Boy is SMA Solar Technology's product family of inverters for residential photovoltaic systems. SMA, founded in 1981 and headquartered in Niestetal near Kassel in northern Hesse, is one of the best-known makers of solar inverters and has been listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange since 2008. Alongside Sunny Boy, it offers inverters for commercial and utility-scale plants, battery storage and energy management systems.

How it works

Solar panels produce direct current, while homes and the grid run on alternating current. An inverter converts one into the other. A string inverter such as the Sunny Boy is connected to one or more strings of panels wired in series. Its power electronics switch the current at high frequency to create a clean alternating current synchronised with the grid. It also continuously adjusts the electrical operating point of the panels, a process called maximum power point tracking, to extract as much energy as possible as sunlight changes. Modern units add monitoring, grid support functions and connections to batteries and home energy management.

Why it stands out

The inverter is the brain of a solar system and one of its most important components for yield and safety. SMA was one of the companies that made rooftop solar practical in Germany, a country that pioneered feed-in tariffs and a mass market for residential photovoltaics. The Sunny Boy became one of the most familiar names among installers. Today SMA faces intense competition from Asian manufacturers, which makes it a test case for whether Europe can keep its own industrial base in the energy transition.

Where you meet it

Sunny Boy inverters hang on garage walls, in cellars and in utility rooms of homes with rooftop solar systems across Europe and in many other markets. Owners often meet them through the monitoring app that shows how much electricity their panels are producing.
