What it is
The Predator is a line of football boots launched by adidas in 1994. Its defining feature is rubber elements on the upper of the boot, designed to increase friction between boot and ball. The concept came from the former Liverpool midfielder Craig Johnston, who developed prototypes and persuaded adidas to adopt the idea after the company had initially rejected it.
How it works
A conventional boot has a smooth leather upper. The original Predator added rubber ridges on the striking surface, working on a similar principle to the rubber on a table tennis bat. When a player strikes or passes the ball, the rubber increases grip, allowing more spin and control, especially in wet conditions. Later versions changed the materials and layout of the grip elements, added fins, textured zones and, from 2017, a laceless design.
Why it stands out
The Predator changed how football boots are designed and marketed. Instead of focusing on fit and durability alone, it promised a performance advantage in touch and ball control. Its success inspired a generation of technical boots from all major brands. Worn by star players, the Predator became an icon of football culture in the 1990s and 2000s. Adidas discontinued the line in 2015 but brought it back in 2017, and new editions continue to be released.
Where you meet it
The Predator is seen in professional leagues and international tournaments, on amateur pitches and in the collections of boot enthusiasts. Reissues of classic models appeal to fans who remember the boots of their football heroes.
