What it is
The Playmobil figure is a plastic toy figure about 7.5 cm tall, made by geobra Brandstätter of Zirndorf near Nuremberg. It was developed by Hans Beck between 1971 and 1974. The first sets, with knights, Native Americans and construction workers, were presented at the International Toy Fair in Nuremberg in 1974, and international sales began in 1975.
How it works
The figure has a simple, friendly design: a round head with a smiling face, movable arms and legs and hands that can grip accessories. Its proportions were chosen to fit comfortably in a child's hand. Hair, hats, clothing and tools can be exchanged, allowing the same basic figure to become a knight, a firefighter or a pirate. The figures are made from durable plastic and are combined with buildings, vehicles and accessories into themed worlds.
Why it stands out
Playmobil created a distinctive category between dolls and construction toys. Its focus on role play and storytelling rather than building encourages children to create their own stories. The consistent scale means that figures and accessories from different decades can still be combined. For many families across Europe, Playmobil is a toy passed down from one generation to the next, and the original figure design has remained recognisable for over fifty years.
Where you meet it
Playmobil figures are found in children's rooms, kindergartens and toy shops, and in theme park and museum gift shops. Adults collect them too, and the brand has appeared in films, exhibitions and advertising campaigns.
